Urban redevelopment and new facilities in the Carrilet area in Reus

The project improves the interrelationship between the neighbourhoods to the North and South, and East and West of the Reus bus station. The proposal undergrounds the new station and part of President Macià Avenue, generating a pedestrian platform that connect el Carrilet Avenue, Escultor Rocamora Street and Mas Iglesias Park. The vegetation of the park (with very low water demand and typical of the Mediterranean landscape of the environment) is spread along the platform and up to the historic center renaturalizing the route, and eliminating road traffic.

The building is arranged around the new square (agora) according to its uses and to allow construction in phases. The current Market building is recovered and the cultural program is located, the Belvedere building, housing and shelter, acts as an architectural landmark with a tower building, and a new intermodal bus station, which is undergrounded to free up public space.

Within the first phase it is proposed to repair and recover the Carrilet Market building and convert it into a “living” structure that brings together the new cultural and civic uses of the city. Recovering the city’s pre-existing buildings saves money and waste, as well as preserving the collective memory of the neighbourhood and improving the environmental footprint.

Throughout the study it is detected that the Escultor Rocamora Street has ground floor premises in disuse and closed. It is proposed to recover them for civic and public uses by distributing part of the program, thus expanding the commercial fabric intertwined with the civic and reducing new construction, with the economic and environmental savings that this entails.
