Paco Candel School
The building volumetry responds to the desire to optimize the spaces with their orientation, to achieve the correct function of the school program and the appearance of interstitial spaces that can be used in a flexible and inclusive way.
Two parallel volumetries are proposed to locate the teaching program. The first one has PB + 1 and the second one, PB + 2, achieving a stepped profile that allows light to enter through the three intermediate courtyards. On the first floor, the square space connects the two volumes. All classrooms have terraces conceived as outdoor classrooms.
The vegetable treatment of the playground makes it a green lung for the neighborhood. The vegetation colonizes in turn the 3 interior courtyards. This sequence of courts and extension spaces becomes the great collective space of the school; the students circulate around them and meet in the community squares and terraces, promoting collective identity and the exchange of plural experiences.
The structure is made of a mixed system of micro-laminated wood and steel for its convenience from a healthy, environmental and constructive point of view. The façade is made of ceramic as a typical material of our Mediterranean climate with good hygrothermal behavior.
The interior playgrouds allows to regulate the temperature and ventilation of the building. With this resource it is possible to propose two thermally differentiated areas: air-conditioned spaces (classrooms) and passive spaces (common areas), achieving a 35% energy saving.
